Matthew Clance

About

Matthew Clance is an Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria and a Fellow at the Pan-African Scientific Council. He specializes in applied econometrics and geospatial analysis of micro Big Data. Matthew has contributed to projects for the Lancet Commission, African Climate Policy Center, and the United States International Trade Commission, demonstrating his expertise in various economic and environmental areas.

His research focuses on international trade, particularly gravity models, and development topics such as the impact of climate change and the influence of geographic features on health outcomes. Matthew also explores structural transformation, conflict, and development, providing insights into the economic landscape of Sub-Saharan Africa. He has supervised numerous PhD and Postdoctoral students in studies related to international trade, structural transformation, and gender inequality in the region.

Matthew integrates international trade and development in his work, utilizing geospatial econometric methods to identify factors contributing to inequality and conflict. His research is published in respected journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, The Journal of Development Studies, Applied Economics, Food Policy, and Tourism Economics.
